The Ultimate NYC Adventure: 30 Must-Visit Spots in the Big Apple

New York City, the city that never sleeps, is a vibrant metropolis filled with iconic landmarks, hidden gems, and unforgettable experiences. Recently, I had the opportunity to explore NYC and create a video highlighting 30 incredible spots. Here’s a quick guide to each location, perfect for anyone planning a trip to this amazing city. Click the accompanying links to find out more about each spot.

1. Grand Central Station

An architectural marvel, Grand Central Station is more than just a transportation hub. It boasts stunning Beaux-Arts design, an astronomical ceiling, and the iconic clock.  It has the world’s largest Tiffany clock on the outside and a ‘whispering’ gallery where you can hear someone’s whispering from the other side of the room.  Worth adding to your list.

2. Rockefeller Plaza

Famous for its ice-skating rink and the towering Rockefeller Center, this area is a hub of activity. Visit during the holidays to see the magnificent Christmas tree.  We had the chance to see the dazzling display that Saks Fifth avenue put on in December of 2019.  That was right before COVID broke out.  This time, we visited during the summer of 2024 and saw NBC’s setup for the Summer Olympics.  This is a can’t miss spot.

3. St. Patrick's Cathedral

This Neo-Gothic cathedral is a serene escape in the heart of bustling Manhattan. Its stunning architecture and peaceful atmosphere make it a must-see.

4. Top of the Rock Observatory

For breathtaking views of NYC, head to the Top of the Rock. From here, you can see Central Park, the Empire State Building, and beyond.  You can pay extra and take a reproduction picture of the famed workers having their lunch on a beam photograph.

5. Radio City Music Hall

Home to the Rockettes, Radio City Music Hall is an iconic venue that has hosted countless legendary performances.

6. The Portal by the Flatiron Building

Connecting NYC to Dublin, the Portal offers a unique, immersive experience where you can virtually interact with people in Ireland.  I played Rock, Paper, Scissors with people on the other side in Dublin and had a blast.  Unfortunately, it was raining when I visited it during the morning.  Dublin looked to have a nice day and there were a good number of people on the other side scoping out NY..

7. Ghostbusters Headquarters

Fans of the classic film will love visiting this firehouse, Hook & Ladder 8, in Tribeca, which served as the headquarters for the Ghostbusters. I ain’t afraid of no ghosts.

8. Times Square

The neon heart of NYC, Times Square is always buzzing with energy. It’s a great spot for people-watching and soaking in the city’s vibe.  I had the chance to meet up with a good friend, Jose, at Times Square during my visit.  When I was younger, I rang in the New Year’s at Times Square during numerous years from early to mid-nineties.

9. The M&M Store

Located in Times Square, this store is a colorful paradise for chocolate lovers, offering a wide variety of M&M-themed merchandise.  There are only 7 M&M stores world-wide!

10. The Oculus

A stunning transportation hub and shopping center at the World Trade Center site, the Oculus is known for its futuristic design.  This is a great place to photograph and get that Instagram shot.

11. One World Trade Center

Also known as the Freedom Tower, it’s the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and offers spectacular views from its observatory.

12. 9/11 Memorial and Museum

A poignant tribute to the victims of the September 11 attacks, the memorial features two reflecting pools set in the footprints of the original Twin Towers.  I was on Long Island when September 11, 2001 happened.  I knew people who were working in both Twin Towers and luckily everyone I knew was safe.  9/11 shaped the world and the Memorial and Museum commerorate that significant event..

13. NY Stock Exchange

The epicenter of global finance, the NYSE on Wall Street is a symbol of economic power. While tours aren’t available, the exterior is impressive.  Take a picture next to the “Fearless Girl” statue.

14. The Charging Bull Statue

This iconic bronze statue near Wall Street symbolizes financial optimism and prosperity. It’s a popular spot for photos. Get there early if you want it all to yourself. You would not believe the line fof people waiting to take a picture of the Bull's rear.

15. Hudson River Park

A beautiful waterfront park on the west side of Manhattan offering recreational activities, scenic views, and a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. It is near Chelsea market and the Gaanesvoort entrance to the High Line.

16. The High Line

This elevated park, built on a former rail line, offers a unique perspective of the city with gardens, art installations, and stunning views. Unfortunately, a small section of it was closed during my visit but felt that I saw enough of the High Line to fully appreciate it.

17. The Vessel at Hudson Yards

An architectural wonder, the Vessel is a honeycomb-like structure you can climb for panoramic views of the Hudson Yards area. Unfortunately, the interior of this building was closed to the general public.

18. Chelsea Market

A foodie’s paradise, Chelsea Market is home to a variety of vendors offering delicious eats, from fresh seafood to artisanal chocolates. Chelsea Market is home to the original Nabisco company that made the famous Oreo cookie. I had a cookies n cream malted in honor of the Oreo, got a dozen doughnuts at Doughnuttery, and walked around the various shops.

19. Brooklyn Bridge Walk

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge provides fantastic views of the Manhattan skyline and is a quintessential NYC experience. I had lived my whole life near NYC and never crossed the Brooklyn Bridge on foot until July 24, 2024. It was a cloudy and muggy day. I was sweating even when I wasn't walking but it was so worth it to do this iconic walk!

20. Manhattan Skyline from Dumbo Park

When you cross the Brooklyn Bridge, you will end up in DUMBO, Brooklyn. DUMBO stands for Down Underneath the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Dumbo offers one of the best views of the Manhattan skyline. The park is a perfect spot for photos and relaxation. Check out Jane's Carousel, Pebble Beach, or get something to eat nearby.

21. Manhattan Bridge from Washington Street

The location, Washington and Water Street in DUMBO, Brooklyn. It is an iconic photo spot because the view perfectly frames the Empire State Building in the background with the Manhattan Bridge in the foreground. Get there early as everyone wants to take a picture here.

22. Go Visit a Museum-

If it's your first time in NYC, I would recommend visiting the MET (Metropolitan Museum). It's collect cannot be beat and is one of the preeminent museums in the world. Unfortunately, the MET was closed on the Wednesday during my visit. So I opted for the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) instead. Home to an extensive collection of modern and contemporary art, MoMA is a cultural treasure trove. It was my first time visiting it. I saw Van Gogh's Starry Night, famous Andy Warhol paintings, Jackson Pollock's work, Jasper John's Flag and more.

23. Rent a Citibike and Ride the Waterfront

Exploring the city on a bike is a great way to see more in less time. The waterfront paths offer scenic and refreshing rides. This turned out to be the highlight of my trip! My friend, Jose, suggested that we do this. We went from Midtown to Downtown by the Battery and back up the West Side of Manhattan. We used the CitiBike stations. Be sure to read the fine print! We used E-Bikes and thought the were included with the $19/day use but were not. It cost us about $50 to use the E-Bikes but it was the best money I spent in NY. We saw so much and had the wind going through our hair. I felt like a teen again and got to really appreciate the city from a whole new perspective.

24. Seeing a Broadway Show (Wicked)

No trip to NYC is complete without experiencing Broadway. My family wanted to see Wicked. Wicked is a spellbinding show that’s sure to impress. Look for a movie version of it to come out soon. Use TKTS to get discounts on same-day and next-day shows

25. Central Park

This sprawling green oasis offers endless activities, from boating and picnicking to visiting the Central Park Zoo. Click here to find out more about Central Park

26. Bryant Park

A lovely park surrounded by skyscrapers, Bryant Park is perfect for relaxing, ice skating in winter, and enjoying free summer movies or a concert .

30. Trinity Church

This historic church at the end of Wall Street is not only an architectural gem but also a key location in National Treasure. The movie’s thrilling climax involves hidden treasures beneath the church. In reality, it housed Alexander Hamilton's gravesite.

31. LEGO Store

We loved seeing the recreations of Starry Night and Ghostbuster's at the LEGO store. Especially, after seeing these in real life! The LEGO store has something for kid in everyone. I think that working for the LEGO store is a bit like Elf for the workers.

Exploring these 31 spots gave me a deeper appreciation for NYC’s diverse culture and vibrant energy. Stay tuned for my full-length video where I dive into each of these experiences!

5 Essential Tips for Visiting NYC

Visiting New York City can be an exhilarating experience, but it can also be overwhelming if you’re not prepared. Here are five essential tips to help you make the most of your trip:

1. Plan Ahead

NYC is packed with things to see and do, so having a rough itinerary can help you make the most of your time. Prioritize the must-see attractions and book tickets for popular spots like the Top of the Rock Observatory and Broadway shows in advance to avoid long lines and sold-out situations.

2. Use Public Transportation

The NYC subway system is one of the fastest and most affordable ways to get around the city. Consider getting an unlimited MetroCard if you’re planning to stay for a few days. Buses, ferries, and bikes (Citibike) are also great ways to explore the city. Download the MTA app for real-time updates on subway and bus schedules.

3. Explore Neighborhoods

Each neighborhood in NYC has its own unique charm and attractions. Spend time in different areas like SoHo, Greenwich Village, Harlem, and Williamsburg in Brooklyn to experience the diverse culture and vibe of the city. Don’t just stick to the main tourist spots; venture out and explore the local haunts.

4. Dress Comfortably

NYC involves a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. The weather can also be unpredictable, so dress in layers and bring an umbrella or raincoat just in case. If you're visiting during the winter, bundle up as it can get very cold.

5. Stay Safe and Aware

NYC is generally safe, but like any big city, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings. Keep your belongings secure, especially in crowded places like Times Square. Avoid isolated areas late at night and trust your instincts if something feels off.
