Experience the Magic of Puerto Rico: A Journey Through Paradise

Updated: Apr 25, 2024

Welcome, adventurers, to the enchanting island of Puerto Rico, where every day promises a new discovery and every moment is filled with wonder. Get ready to embark on an nine-day journey that will take you from historic cobblestone streets to pristine tropical rainforests and breathtaking beaches. With Divine Eye Adventures as your guide, prepare to be immersed in the vibrant culture, natural beauty, and unforgettable experiences of Puerto Rico.  This is our story.

Day 1: Old San Juan

Our journey begins in the heart of Puerto Rico's capital city, Old San Juan. Step back in time as you wander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with colorful colonial buildings, centuries-old forts, and charming plazas. Dive into the island's rich history as you explore iconic landmarks such as El Morro and San Cristobal forts, and indulge in delicious local cuisine at quaint cafes and restaurants tucked away in hidden corners.

We spent a few hours touring Old San Juan. Unfortunately, it was raining on and off. We took our rental car, bought items at a food store, and traveled to our AirBnB in Aquatika, Loiza where we explored our AirBnB amenities and made a home-cooked meal.

Day 2: Luquillo Beach and Kiosks

On day two, we head to the breathtaking shores of Luquillo Beach, where pristine white sands meet crystal-clear turquoise waters. Spend your day soaking up the sun, swimming in the warm Caribbean Sea, or simply relaxing in the shade of swaying palm trees. And don't forget to explore the famous Luquillo Kiosks, where you can indulge in mouthwatering local dishes and refreshing tropical drinks.  I had a delicious seafood mofongo with a pina colada in a carved-out pineapple for lunch. (Sigh).  We liked Kiosk #49 which served traditional Puerto Rican food.  We bought souvenirs and walked the strip.  Make this a ‘must’ on your visit.  We loved it!

Day 3: El Yunque Tropical Rainforest

Venture into the lush jungles of El Yunque, the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System. Trek through verdant trails lined with towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and exotic wildlife. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of nature as you hike to stunning viewpoints, swim in natural pools, and learn about the rich biodiversity of this ecological paradise.

We decided to do the waterslide tour at El Yunque.  Our tour guide, Miguel, was phenomenal.  I cherished the idea that the native Taino’s considered el Yunque as sacred.  I felt its energy too.  The hike was challenging and, at one point, I fell flat on my face when I slipped on muddy ground. The hike is not for everyone.  We had to scamper up a mud wall using a rope to pull ourselves up.  Please be advised. BRING WATER SHOES, like Keen Sandals, as you will be trudging through the mud and river along the way and it made my experience less worrisome.  Overall, my whole family loved it.  Hiking in El Yunque is an experience to remember.

Day 4: Flamenco Beach on Culebra

Escape to the idyllic island of Culebra and discover the pristine beauty of Flamenco Beach. With its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, Flamenco is often ranked among the world's top beaches. Spend your day swimming, snorkeling, or simply lounging on the shore as you soak in the serene beauty of this tropical paradise.

I went to Culebra island by myself to visit Flamenco Beach.  My family decided to enjoy the amenities at our AirBnB and relax instead.  Flamenco Beach was easily the highlight of the entire trip for me.  Its beauty is on another level.  The turquoise waters seemed surreal to my eyes.  It was unlike any other place I’ve ever seen.  Be careful snorkeling there!  I almost died when I was caught in an undertow along the reef off the shore.  I didn’t let anyone know where I was and didn’t have snorkel fins to help swim back.  I definitely learned a valuable life lesson from this experience!

Day 5: Travel West to East:  Mar de Chiquita

Explore Puerto Rico's rugged north coast as we journey to Mar de Chiquita. Marvel at dramatic sea cliffs, hidden caves, and natural rock formations carved by the relentless forces of the ocean.

We packed our bags and checked out of our AirBnB early in the morning.  The drive was 2 hours long and smooth for the most part.  We stopped at Mar de Chiquita and wished we could stay longer.  The clam-shell beach was gorgeous and very interesting.  There’s a vibrant local scene here with vendors and music playing.

Day 6: Crashboat Beach and Aguadilla

Experience the laid-back charm of Crashboat Beach in Aguadilla, a favorite destination among locals and visitors alike. Swim in the calm turquoise waters, try your hand at snorkeling or paddleboarding, or simply relax on the golden sands and watch the world go by. Afterward, explore the vibrant town of Aguadilla, known for its colorful street art, bustling markets, and delicious seafood.

Day 7: Pena Blanca and Tunel de Guajataca

Our seventh day takes us off the beaten path to the hidden gems of Pena Blanca and Tunel de Guajataca. We hiked the secluded beach of Pena Blanca, where you can swim, snorkel, or simply unwind in the tranquility of this remote paradise.  Journey through natural limestone tunnels carved by centuries of ocean waves at Tunel de Guajacata, and marvel at the breathtaking views of the Atlantic coastline.

Day 8: Snorkeling at Tres Palmas Reserve in Rincon

Our final day takes us to the unique marine ecosystem of Tres Palmas.  We snorkeled with Rincon Diving & Snorkeling.  Our tour guide Greg was great and very patient with the little ones.  During this trip, we saw a nurse shark, a sea turtle, many different types of fish and coral.

Day 9: San Juan

Hit up the spots you missed on day one or spend the day on Condado Beach to soak in the sun.  Get ready to return back home.

As our nine-day adventure comes to an end, we took a moment to reflect on the unforgettable experiences, lasting memories, and newfound connections forged along the way. From the historic streets of Old San Juan to the pristine beaches of Culebra and beyond, Puerto Rico has captured our hearts and left an indelible mark on our souls. Until we meet again, may your travels be filled with endless wonder and boundless joy.
